Baylor vs. SMU - Feb 25, 2008

The Baylor Men’s Lacrosse Team suffered its first conference loss Saturday but achieved a moral victory against the heavily favored SMU Lacrosse team. Despite being 11 point underdogs the Baylor Bears were able to control the lead for most of the game and shut down the Mustangs vaunted offense. Unbelievable play by Sophomore Goalie Matthew McPheeters denied the goal to the many shots of the SMU team. The Bear’s Defense played a solid game keeping SMU scoreless until late into the 2nd quarter and keeping the ball on the offensive side of the field with efficient clears. Senior Andrew Brochu and Freshman Luke Whyte were able to lead the offense to hard fought goals against a tough SMU defense. Despite holding the lead late into the 4th quarter numbers, fortune, and penalties took their toll as SMU took the lead with 2 minutes remaining to win 8-6. Despite the loss the game proves that the Baylor team playing at their best can compete against any team the LSA has to offer. The Bear’s fresh off this tough loss look forward to playing in the Carolinas next week.

Baylor vs. Oklahoma - Feb 21, 2008

The Baylor Bears secured their first conference victory Sunday against Oklahoma. The Bear not only battled the Sooners but the poor field conditions caused by this weekend’s thunderstorm. The team got out to an early lead in the mud with outstanding play from Midfielder Andrew Brochu and attack man Luke Whyte yet were faced with adversity as penalties and heads up play by the Sooners narrowed the lead early in the second quarter. It would be the Bears though that would gain momentum going into halftime with a clutch last minute goal from freshman Ben Kessler. While the Sooners managed to grab a brief lead in the early third quarter the defense lead by Josh Brown, Preston Benditz, and Lucas Rodriquez managed to choke off the Sooners offense with key takeaways and groundballs. The offense capitalized on the team’s ball control with a streak of goals from Chris Jones and the powerful left handed shooting of Michael Magee. Freshman Gideon Powell sealed the outcome of the game by standing in front of a shot and taking the ball all the way across the  torn up field for an assisted goal. The Bears won a solid 15-9 victory for their first conference win and look forward to facing Conference rival SMU in Dallas next weekend.
